How To Determine Your Size
Important Points:
We recommend you get someone else to help measure you. Trying to measure yourself is the least accurate method.
Obtain a soft cloth tape measure. Metal ones do not work well. If you must use a metal tape measure, perform the measurements with  a strip of fabric and measure the fabric.
If you have access to a tailor or a formal dress shop, have a professional measure you.
Different designers have different size charts. They are often similar but they do vary. Some designers have more than one size chart.
Wear the exact undergarments you will wear with the dress. The most accurate measurements are made without other clothes on.
Formal dress sizes are quite different from street clothes. Do not be surprised if you are several sizes larger.
How To Measure
Where to Measure
Bust:
Measure over the fullest part of your bust. Tape should be snug but not tight. Be sure it goes straight around and does not sag in the back.
Waist:
Measure around your natural waste-line. This is the thinnest part, typically 2-4″ above your belly button. If you bend to the side, a crease forms at your natural waste.
Hips:
Measure around the fullest part of your hips. Tape should be level as it goes around.
How to Use Size Chart
Typical Size Chart
For this exercise, say your measurements are (bust-waist-hips) 36-26-39
Start with your
bust
measurement of 36. It is between a size 6 and size 8. Go with the next larger size, size 8 which will give you half an inch breathing room.
Next, your
waist
measurement of 26 indicates a size 4. However if you wear a size 4 it would be too small for your bust. So size 8 remains the best choice so far.
Your
hip
measurement of 39 indicates a size 6. Again a six would be too small for your bust, so a size 8 is your best choice.
Note: Some dress cuts (ex. Empire) drape over the hips so that the hip measurement is less important.
